Throughout history, the island has had many rulers, but the Roman and Arab influences have left the most lasting impression. Much of the remaining temples and artwork show strong Roman flavor, and the modern Maltese language contains much Arab influence. The Knights of Malta became the military religious order that governed Malta beginning in the early 1500s, and under their rule the city of Valletta was born.
