Are you planning on being in Rome in April?

Plan your trip ahead of time.
Every year numerous people travel to the Vatican to partake in the Easter celebrations presided over by the Pope. The celebrations commence with the Blessing of the Palms, Procession and Mass on Palm Sunday in Saint Peter's Square and continue throughout the week and into the weekend. Good Friday begins with A Celebration of the Lord's Passion in the Vatican Basilica, followed by Way of the Cross in the Colosseum. Holy Saturday marks the inception of the Easter Vigil in the Holy Night at the Vatican Basilica, and finally, on Easter Sunday, thousands of faithfuls go to Saint Peter's Square for Mass, which Holy Father Benedict XVI now presides.

Although this is very religious time and some of Rome may be hibernating, there is still much you can experience off the beaten trail. If the Vatican and Colosseum are too crowded for your liking during this time, you can venture over to the Spanish Steps and Trevi Fountain, and take in more of the backstreet markets Rome has to offer. If you want to get out of the city, take a trip just outside of Rome and visit Assisi. Hana Highway! Everyone’s heard of this famous highway 360, as it is one of Maui’s major tourist destinations. The drive alone is enough to wow most travelers; however, I thought I would mention a few of the many attractions along this adventurous road.

Haipua’ena Falls, the first of many falls to come along the Hana Highway, located just past mile marker 11. The hike up to the larger fall that feeds Haipua’ena can be treacherous, but the smaller falls are still worth taking a look

Ching’s Pool, also known as the Blue Sapphire Pools, are located about 9 miles past mile marker 16. Take the path to the left of the bridge, as it is an easier climb than the path right next to the bridge. There is a gorge that connects these crystal clear, blue pools to one another. If the water flow is strong enough, you can even ride the “waves” from pool to pool.

The Red Sand Beach is located south of Hana Bay, and on the far side of Ka’uiki Hill. This beach poses, with its red-black color originating from the cinder-cone volcano surrounding the bay. This beach is the ultimate for sunbathing as it’s in a very isolated area. Be careful on the path leading down to the beach.

Berlin is a city both old and new. Having been unified less than 20 years, you can still see remnants of its divided past. Today, much has changed and the city continues to evolve. This is what makes Berlin so special: just from exploring the sights, you feel like you are living through a series of historical events.

May 2005 marked the 60th anniversary of the fall of the Nazi regime. Barcelona

Welcome to the second largest city in Spain, famous for its fashion and architecture. Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia and rests on the northeast coast of Spain.

International Flare in Edinburgh

Besides its beautiful castle, Edinburgh is well known for its annual International Festival, which runs from August to September. Western Australia's Maritime Museum in Fremantle has quickly become quite the hot topic. Located on Victoria Quay, this architectural masterpiece was first open to the public December 1st, 2002. Boasting six themed galleries: The Indian Ocean, Tin Canoe to Australia II, Fremantle and the Swan River, Hooked on Fishing, Cargoes, and Naval Defence, the Maritime Museum is the first museum of the Indian Ocean. The Maritime Museum is also home to the famous Shipwreck Galleries, which contain original pieces from shipwrecks as early as the 17th Century. The most famous of these being the reconstructed remains of the Batavia, which was discovered by archaeologists in the 1970s.

“Welcome to the Moulin Rouge”…no, not the movie, or song, but infamous home of Parisian cabaret. The “Red Mill” was built in the red-light district in the 18th arrondissement in 1889. Situated on Boulevard de Clichy, near Montmartre in Paris, the building itself is famous for the large red faux-windmill on its rooftop.
The Moulin Rouge was and still is a fixture in Bohemian culture, introducing the French Cancan and burlesque acts. With a history so rich, it is no wonder the landmark has been portrayed by authors and artists alike. The “Moulin Rouge” being the title of a book written by Pierre La Mure, which was adapted into a movie in 1952 and most recently in 2001.

Temples signify a place of worship in Japanese Buddhism. Their basic purpose is the storing and displaying of sacred Buddhist effects, and some are still functioning monasteries. There are a few different styles of structures:

The Main hall, hosts sacred objects of worship, and are usually called kondo, butsuden, amidado, hatto, or hondo.

The Lecture halls are for meetings and also to display objects of worship, calling them kodo.
A Pagoda usually comes with 3 or 5 stories and are used to store remains of the Buddha, usually in the form of a representation.

There is usually one Main Gate that marks the entrance to the entrance or temple grounds. There may also be several additional gates.

Most temples house some form of Buddhist cemetery when Japanese can visit their ancestors’ graves.

The most visited city park in all of the United States, Central Park has become something of a novelty. Bordered by West 110th Ave., West 59th Street, and Fifth Avenue, Central Park welcomes around 25 million visitors a year. Most of the park is entirely landscaped including a few artificial lakes, numerous walking paths, playgrounds, two ice skating rinks and a wildlife sanctuary.

With a tremendous rise in population in the mid 1800s, New York City became increasingly crowded and loud. The New York people were running out of places to just “get away”. The people were finally given a voice with the poet, Andrew Jackson Downing, who proposed the New York legislature set aside 700 acres for a park. The Central Park Commission decided on a design called the “Greensward Plan”, which was proposed by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux.

Before breaking ground on Central Park, the issue of where to move the 1600 inhabitants of that land, needed to be addressed. Most were very poor and immigrants. Using eminent domain as their tool, the city evicted the residents, and torn down most of Seneca Village. Once construction got under way, more than 500,000 cubic feet of top soil had to be transported from New Jersey because the original soil wasn’t good enough to sustain new growth. The park has gone through a few changes throughout its lifespan, but for the most part, has become a landmark in itself. Opera Australia, the Sydney Theatre Company, and the Sydney Symphony, all call the Sydney Opera House home. Located on Bennelong Point in the Sydney Harbor, stands one of the most famous performing arts venues in the world.

The exterior of the building is something that draws tourists to this location in droves. The many roofs are made of 1 million glossy white Swedish tiles, and the entire building covers 4.5 acres. With five theatres, five rehearsal studios, four restaurants and six bars, it is safe to say the interior is extensive. Pink granite and wood supplied from New South Whales, adorns the majority of the interior.

It was the wish of Eugene Goossens, the Director of the NSW State Conservatorium of Music, to create a suitable venue for large productions in the late 1940s. The basic designed was to be determined by the Premier of NSW, Joseph Cahill, out of a competition that attracted 233 entries. Jorn Utzon, a Danish architect submitted the winning design, and began overseeing the project in 1957.

This huge venture was quoted at $7 million and was supposed to be completed in 1963. $102 million later, in 1973, the Sydney Opera House was formally opened by Queen Elizabeth II. Many Australians thought the project would never be completed as the construction costs so exceeded the projected amount. However, in 1975, the bill was finally paid off largely through a public lottery system. Located on The Bund in bustling Shanghai, the Peace Hotel has been a Chinese landmark for almost a century. The hotel is situated on Nanjing Road, busiest shopping mall in Shangahai, overlooking the Huangpu River. Constructed in 1929, the Peace Hotel, formerly known as the Cathay Hotel, has been known as the “Number 1 Mansion in the Far East”.

The hotel itself is made up of two former hotels separated by a street, with the North and South buildings being constructed in 1929 and 1906, respectively. In 1949, after the founding of the People’s Republic of China, both buildings re-opened, using the Peace Hotel name. The Guggenheim, is one of the best known museums in all of New York. Founded in 1937 as “The Museum of Non-Objective Painting”, the Guggenheim was created to showcase artwork that was classified as avant-garde. In 1959, it was moved to its present location and the corner of 89th Street and Fifth Avenue, across from the infamous Central Park.

The museum is a piece of artwork in itself, as it was Frank Lloyd Wright’s final major project. The trend-setting architect designed the building to look like a piece of white ribbon curling into a cylindrical stack. In comparison to the uniformly boxy buildings of Manhattan, Wright’s design is an attention grabber to say the least. The building has been criticized by many that feel the design overshadows the artwork displayed within. Much of the artwork has to be lit by artificial light, as the niches are shadowed by the stacked walkways. Hanging artwork becomes difficult also, as the walls aren’t vertical or flat, rather concave, and due to limited spaces in the niches, sculptures are usually displayed in the spiral walkway itself.

The Guggenheim foundation decided to supplement the original building with a rectangular tower in 1992, in order to be able to host more artwork. Designed by Gwathmey Siegel and Associates, this addition dealt with its fair share of controversy, as many felt the iconic building should not be messed with. The Guggenheim remains a landmark of the Upper East Side in New York City and is a must-see for anyone traveling through. The Colosseum, or Colosseo, is arguably the most famous amphitheatre, located at the heart of Rome, Italy. This architectural feat, was the largest amphitheatre built in the Roman Empire, seating 50,000 spectators. The finishing touches were put on this remarkable structure in 80 AD, and remained in use for almost 500 years. The Colosseum is most famously known its traditional gladiator games, but early Romans also held re-encarnations of famous battles, animal hunts, mock sea battles, and dramas based on ancient mythology.

The site of the monument was chosen between the Caelian, Esquiline and Palatine Hills, by a nearby stream, sparking rapid growth in the area. The Colosseum went through several radical changes during the Medieval period, from having a small church built into the structure, to being used as a castle by the Frangipani family in the 1200s. Then in the 16th and 17th century, the Church, under the guidance of Pope Sixtus, decided to take a more active roll, and planned on turning the building into a wool factory to provide employment for those in need. However this plan fell through with his death.

Today, the Colosseum is one of the most popular tourist attractions, not only in Rome, but in the world. The effects of general deterioration sparked a restoration program between 1993 and 2000, costing around 40 billion lira.

Although the interior of the Colosseum is in no condition to host events anymore, some internationally known performers, including Paul McCartney and Elton John, have held concerts just outside, using this incredible structure as a backdrop. The Brussels Town Hall, or Hôtel de Ville, stands in the infamous Grand-Place, in Brussels, Belgium. The eldest part of the Town Hall, was constructed under Jacob van Thienen, and commenced in 1402. This wing boasts the belfry, or bell, tower, that stands approximately 315 feet tall and was constructed in the Gothic style that was so popular in the 15th century. The archangel Michael, who is the patron saint of Brussels, stands guard atop the tower spire, slaying a dragon.

Legend has it, one of the Town Hall's architects, leapt from the tower upon realizing that the front archway and the main building facade were off-center. However, considering the gaps in construction and change of direction in architecture, the lack of symmetry was an expected and accepted consequence.

Much of the interior of the Town Hall was destroyed during an attack on Brussels in 1695 by a French army under the guidance of the Duke of Villeroi. While the exterior remained mostly intact, many artifacts and archives were lost forever.

The Trevi fountain, or Fontana di Trevi, is the largest Baroque fountain in Rome, Italy. The fountain is placed at the juncture of three roads, hence the name tre vie. Originally a simple, small basin, Pope Urban VIII commissioned Bernini to design some possible renovations in 1629. When the Pope died, the project was abandoned, and wasn't revisited until 1730. Pope Clement XII commissioned Nicola Salvi for the final fountain, and work began in 1732. Salvi would pass away in 1751, 12 years before the fountain was completed, but Giuseppe Pannini would put the final touches on this amazing work of art.

The main theme behind the fountain is the Taming of the Waters, hence Neptune, the God of Water, placed in the center niche, being guided by Tritons. On either side of Neptune is Abundance, spilling water from her urn, and Salubrity, holding a cup of water from which a snake drinks. Neptune is framed by a triumphal arch, which is usually built to signify a victory in war.

A little-known fact on the "three coins" myth. It has been said, that if one throws three coins with one's right hand over their left shoulder, into the fountain, they would have good luck. This is all well and good, except the original three coins were thrown by three different individuals. The real legend is that, if you throw one coin in the fountain, you are ensured a return trip to Rome, two coins and you will get married, and three coins ensures divorce.
